Aave is a decentralized protocol that lets people lend and borrow cryptocurrencies without going through a bank or other central intermediary. Users who supply assets into Aave's pools earn interest, while borrowers can take out loans by posting other crypto as collateral. Because positions are typically over-collateralized, borrowers must deposit more value than they withdraw, which protects lenders if prices move. Interest rates adjust automatically based on how much of a given asset is supplied versus borrowed. The AAVE token serves as the protocol's governance token, letting holders vote on changes to the system, and it also plays a role in the protocol's safety mechanisms. Aave is one of the longer-running and more widely used lending platforms in decentralized finance, and it has expanded across multiple blockchains. It is also known for popularizing "flash loans," a feature that allows borrowing and repaying within a single transaction. As with any DeFi protocol, there are real risks to understand. Smart-contract bugs, sharp market swings that trigger collateral liquidations, oracle or pricing failures, and changes approved through governance can all affect users.
